Reader,

Life = Made

Not only has John Strelecky sold 6 million copies of The Cafe on the Edge of the World but he also almost went pro in volleyball.

Last week I joined him on the South Mission Beach courts here in San Diego for a few hours of doubles volleyball.

Safe to say I was humbled…

3 Secrets

1. Forget the listeners: connect with the host

Malcolm Gladwell, in The Tipping Point, talks about connectors. People who know everyone. If someone hosts an interview-style podcast they probably know more people than the average person.

Yes, showing up on a podcast ready to connect with listeners is important, but if that’s all you’re focusing on, you’re missing what’s right in front of you. Even if no listeners buy the book, a podcast interview may still be well worth it if you’re able to create a fan out of the host.

So how can you do that?
1. Listen to at least one episode before you appear and then reference that episode you listened to during your interview (gives the host all kinds of good feelings)
2. Check their website or ask for a physical address to send a little thank you to. Even if no one listens to their podcast, they will be interviewing dozens if not hundreds of others and if you are a favorite guest, they’re going to talk about you and your book. I love these book themed Thank-You Cards that we also send to all new clients.
3. When researching which shows to go on to begin with, ensure that not only the listener is aligned but that the host would make an ideal reader.

I know all this works because I interview authors on Before The Bestseller and love recommending my favorite guests’ books to other guests. Additionally, by focusing on teaching and providing directly helpful advice to the host you’ll end up with a more engaging episode for listeners.

2. Offer to send free boxes of books to your partners

One way we seed copies here at ShelfLife is by offering to send boxes of books to anyone who works with authors for them to gift as part of their own onboarding with their clients.

If you’ve written a valuable book then you can give it away to your partners for free to use as a gift when they onboard new clients.

You’re providing a gift for your partners to elevate their own client experience and getting a book in the hands of an ideal reader at the same time.

3. Quick Win!

THIS WEEK: Tell someone about your book and your vision for it

Dr. Shefali, of The Conscious Parent, kept telling people that Oprah needed to hear about her book.

Eventually, someone she spoke to had a connection, leading to a Super Soul Sunday appearance.

Consistently sharing your vision creates unexpected opportunities through extended networks.

  1. I have a book marketing podcast, but THIS is MY favorite book marketing podcast to listen to 🙂
  2. The host of the above podcast is hosting a training session on Thursday on how to create an AI book marketing team (PR Agent, Chief of Staff Agent, Book Listing Agent, Webmaster Agent, etc). Check that out here. It is $37 to attend but I fully recommend everything Thomas does and I’m not getting any compensation for sharing it.
