editorial reviews are not dead and permission to stop

3 secrets, 2 links & 1 quote

Thank you to all of those have left a review so far on Before The Bestseller.

If these 3-2-1’s have been of value to you over the last few years, a review here will help others avoid wasting hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars on their book marketing (& make a HUGE difference in my life :))

3 Secrets

  1. Doug Evans, author of The Sprout Book, is fifty-six years old and started with no following three years ago. Now, over 200,000 followers on TikTok and 100,000 followers on Instagram later, he’s closing in on 100,000 copies of his book sold at the time of this writing. When he started, he found people with 10,000, 20,000 ,and 30,000 followers and direct messaged them asking if they had heard about sprouting and if they wanted a copy of his book. These connections led to connections with even bigger influencers, who then invited him to be a guest on their shows. He boasts shamelessly about asking everyone and anyone.
  2. Building a bridge: People are saying editorial reviews are dead. WRONG! I disagree vehemently. Collecting editorial reviews alone doesn’t sell books….alone. Use those editorial reviews to build a bridge from their audience to yours. For example, Catherine Duncan of Everyday Awakening has a blurb from Mel Robbins, “Everyday Awakening is your road map to living a fully engaged life.” Catherine is targeting her audience with that quote on FB and it’s driving MEGA sales.
  3. The worst thing you can do: Rob Fitzpatrick despises creating content where he’s staring into a camera monologuing. However, he does enjoy engaging with his audience. So, Rob responds to his audience’s questions via recorded videos that he can re-purpose as video snippets for various social media platforms. Nick Trenton, author of million-copies-sold Stop Overthinking, doesn’t do interviews. I know, I’ve tried to interview him! You know what he said to me? “I avoid interviews like the plague, as I’m sure you’ve noticed.” Nick was smart to say no to me—clearly, as it hasn’t stopped his book, Stop Overthinking, from being on its way to selling over a million copies, if it hasn’t already. You’re much more likely to commit to things you enjoy doing. You always have three options with marketing activities you don’t enjoy:
    • Don’t choose it as one of your tools.
    • Find a way to enjoy it (like Rob).
    • Get someone else to do it for you.

You don’t have to use all the tools in your book marketing tool belt. Focus on the ones you are actually doing, or find a way to make the ones you don’t enjoy doing suck less. I give you permission to just say no.

Catherine Duncan (one of the most interesting humans I know) of Everyday Awakening stopped by to talk about her insane life (almost dying multiple times, providing hospice care to hundreds at the end of their lives) and walks us through a meditative breathing exercise.

Alex and his team are the first agency out of every single one I’ve worked with that has truly under-promised and over-delivered. Within a few months, they have tripled the results of my previous agencies and what I have…
